Come one, come all to Pittsburgh, PA. Why? Pittsburgh is the home of Heinz Field and PNC Park; the homes of the Pittsburgh Steelers / University of Pittsburgh Panthers the Pittsburgh Pirates, respectively.

Heinz Field

The stadium is on the northside of Pittsburgh, along the Ohio River. It opened in 2001 and is named after the H.J. Heinz Company, who purchased the naming rights in 2001. It incorporated 12,000 tons of steel into the design to keep with the history of the city. It also has a natural grass surface that was criticized at first but, the Steelers players and ownership fought to keep it.

The Coca-Cola Great Hall is on the east side of the stadium. It contains a collection of Steelers and Pittsburgh Panther memorabilia. For example, there are actual lockers of former famous players (Joe Greene, Bill Dudley, Jerome Bettis, and more) and a timeline of the Steelers major events throughout their winning history. Also, the word Steelers is painted in black over a gold background on the floor so that it will resemble their old field from Three Rivers Stadium. The University of Pittsburgh is represented by 2 large murals and 8 additional tile murals that demonstrate their history were created by local high schools.

PNC Park

The stadium is on the north shore along the Allegheny River. It opened in 2001 and is sponsored by PNC Financial Services. It is unique because it incorporates limestone in the facade and has steel truss work. The stadium also has natural grass and can seat 38,496 people.

The stadium has a picnic area on the top of the right field stands that can sit up to 300 fans. There is also a Brew Pub in the Left Field for 500 people that offers a beautiful view of the field and city. Along the first base side you will find an outside terrace where you can get to taste the multi-ethnic cuisine of Pittsburgh. A little of everything can be found here.

There are a number of pros and cons to visiting Pittsburgh’s college campuses over the summertime. While this could be one of the easiest times to make arrangements to travel and find rooms at hotels near Pitt, it might not be the time to get an accurate perception of how the colleges actually function.

Traveling in the summer

Ideally, traveling to a college should take place during the summer between junior and senior year of high school. This gives you plenty of time to complete the application process for your top choices. There are a number of colleges in the Pittsburgh area, so you should make the most of your journey.

Pros

The pros of visiting in the summer are numerous. For starters, you might be able to get a better parking spot. Although some colleges have specific parking places for visitors, these might be further away from the actual classrooms. You also might be able to see different areas of campus that might be off-limits during the semester. Pittsburgh is proud of Heinz Field, the home of the Pittsburgh Steelers. The city is equally proud of PNC Park where the Pittsburgh Pirates play their home games. Both sporting locations also offer a variety of other activities throughout the year. Together these sporting arenas draw thousands and thousands of people to this beautiful city that offers something for everyone. Heinz Field

While Heinz Field is the home to the Steelers it is also where the University of Pittsburgh Panthers play their games. First opened in 2001, it is named after the H.J. Heinz Company which is based in Pittsburgh. Since the city is known for steel the stadium was designed with that in mind. During the building 12,000 tons of steel went into the design. The Steelers played their first preseason game there a week later. They defeated the Detroit Lions 20-7 with 57,829 spectators watching the game.

PNC Park

The Pirates played their first game at PNC Park the same year as the Steelers, in 2001. The park sits along the shore of the Allegheny River. It offers scenic vistas of the Pittsburgh skyline, downtown, and the riverfront. The Pirates first team organized in 1887 and PNC Park is their fifth home. The park offers some fantastic features. One of these is the offering of 69 suites that have their own concourse level. There is also an outfield barbecue along with an outdoor river terrace and river walk. The park strongly reflects on the legacy of the club as few places can say they have a 115- year relationship with the same ballclub.
